Janet B. Arrowsmith,

Janet B. Arrowsmith is an Internal Medicine physician and a CDC-trained epidemiologist who worked in the U.S. Public Health Service for nearly 14 years. She worked at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in the Indian Health Service and volunteered for 8 years at a DC AIDS clinic. She held a faculty position at Georgetown University Medical Center and currently has a community faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She has a regulatory consulting firm in New Mexico, working with companies and individuals affected by the FDA. Dr. Arrowsmith graduated from Duke University with a degree in zoology and received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. Born and raised in New Orleans, she completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and was selected for the CDC’s epidemiology fellowship program in 1984. She worked at the FDA for more than 11 years before moving to New Mexico with her family in 1996. 

Dr. Arrowsmith has published numerous journal articles and abstracts addressing postmarket safety issues related to FDA-regulated products and has authored or co-authored several book chapters on medical product safety. She has been active in combatting human trafficking, having served as President of the Board of Directors for New Mexico Organized Against Trafficking Humans (NM OATH). As much as possible, she volunteers her medical services to persons seeking asylum in the U.S. She has received numerous awards, including the New Mexico Medical Society’s Community Service Award and the USDA’s award as a woman of courage, caring and commitment for her work in raising awareness about human trafficking. She is deeply concerned about the lack of health care in our prison systems and the consequences for prisoners and their families. She lives in Corrales, New Mexico, serving as Nana to three beautiful grandchildren who live nearby.
